Discover the 2 first international exchange students from IPADE Mexico

Walk us through your career/academic path to date i.e., where are you from, where did you study or work in the past

Ana Gabriela Castaño: I was born in the United States but was raised in Mexico, just at the border in a town called Piedras Negras, Coahuila. I studied high school and my bachelor’s degree in San Antonio, Texas. I am now completing my MBA at IPADE Monterrey campus. I have worked in the family business for the most part and have had jobs within the business that involve purchasing, human resources, and administration.

Marisa Lopez Monterrubio: My name is Marisa Lopez Monterrubio, I have 27 years old and I am from Mexico. I am studying a MBA at IPADE Business School in Mexico City. I have a bachelor in Administration and Finance and prior joining business school I worked for 4 years as financial analyst in the pharmaceutical industry.

What was it that made you decide to join an exchange in Luxembourg?

Ana Gabriela Castaño: I knew I wanted to do my exchange term in Europe because I wanted to visit some of the places I’ve never been before. Luxembourg is very centric to all the places I wanted to visit. A second reason was that I knew people spoke French here and, since I have a minor in French, I thought it was a great opportunity to practice the language. The last reason was that Luxembourg has a great reputation – very rich country that has a lot of job opportunities.

Marisa Lopez Monterrubio: I chose Luxembourg due to its international environment and its business and financial relevance for the European Union. Also, I wanted to come to a place where I could learn French and continue practicing my English.

What was it that made you choose that program [at Luxembourg School of Business] specifically?

Ana Gabriela Castaño: Luxembourg School of Business has an agreement with IPADE, therefore that was the program they offered to us.

Marisa Lopez Monterrubio: I chose LSB because I wanted to be immersed in a multicultural environment. I knew it was the best place to meet people from around the world and understand the perspective of my colleagues and professors about how business is done in Europe and specifically in Luxembourg.

What are you expecting for the exchange semester?

Ana Gabriela Castaño: I expect to create a great network – with my classmates and my teachers. I expect to learn all that I can and to experience a new culture. Even during COVID I will try and travel to neighboring countries: Belgium, France, Germany, etc.

Marisa Lopez Monterrubio: To learn as much as possible about the business environment in Europe, how to create and launch a new enterprise in Luxembourg and be able to fully immerse myself in the local culture.

Any tips for prospective international exchange [students] looking to study in Luxembourg?

Ana Gabriela Castaño: Best advice and tips I can give is to not think about it too much and just go for it. I know a lot of people are scared of studying abroad, whether it be for the language, the different culture, or just afraid of living somewhere completely new – but there’s a great benefit to doing all of these. Exchange programs not only help you learn but they help you grow as a person. You become more independent, your mind opens and you get to see how other people live far far away from home.

Along with that, I would say that Luxembourg is a great place to do your exchange for the reasons I mentioned before. It’s very centric to the rest of Europe, it’s a small country so you can get to know Luxembourg in its entirety as well as visit other neighboring countries.

I’ve only been in Luxembourg for 2 weeks but so far, I am very glad I chose Luxembourg and LSB as my destination to complete my exchange program.

Marisa Lopez Monterrubio: If you really want to come to a Business School in Europe where you can make friends and meet people from around the world while living in one small but very international country Luxembourg is the best place to come.
